Great insight, and I stopped and reflected with each paragraph about how it might apply to me. Though confident in many areas, I question myself in others, and this inspired me to look more closely and see if I can understand why.

Vicki,
This is a great entry. Self worth is where it all starts...I have not seen the movie The Help but am very interested to see it now, and i hear the book is a good one as well. Reading this made me think of a couple of people...then when I finished thought to myself, why other people and not myself. There are a lot of things that I can do better, and it starts now. Thank you!

So true... and works both ways. How often do we ignore or brush off the heart felt compliments that others give to us?? I am so very guilty of "hearing" all the criticism - constructive or otherwise - but not allowing positive feedback to get past the surface.

Keep boundaries... but make sure your filter allows the good things in!

Great article. I think we all struggle with this even if we don't realize it. We are after all who we are because of all things in our lives positive as well as negative. Recognizing things is the first step to being able to deal, move on and change if you need to. Thank you so much for the article it came at a good time for me.

What a great post! When I was young it was engraved in my being that elders are ALWAYS to be listened to and respected. I was never taught that some "elders" have no clue what they are talking about sometimes and in turn I let other peoples perspectives control my own. With that said, as an adult I've struggled to find the "true" me based on my own values so that I can take the good and leave the bad. I'm so glad you posted this! As a Mom it's my goal to build my children's confidence and decision making skills so that they don't fall into this trap.

Thanks for the reminder, Vicki. We have enough negative self-talk going on in our own head- we don't need others adding to it. I have experienced a lot of abuse in my life and the verbal stuff is near impossible to forget. Thankfully, there is a lot of support available, including people like you, to help build one's confidence back up and become the Kick-Ass person we are meant to be!

There was a time when I was 20 in nursing school. I was going thru the OB/GYN rotation and my instructor told me that I would never make it as a nurse, but I would make a damn fine nurse's aide! Instead of of letting it get to me, I buckled down and studied even harder. I aced the very next text she gave us -- and no one ever had done that before! Sometimes we can take negativity and turn it into a challenge that we can prove to our self that we are NOT what other people say. It's simply their opinion and they are probably seeing it through their own filter and it may be a reflection of something dark inside themselves!.

Soooooo true! Funny how the negative things people say seem to weigh 5x the positive.
I've battled sensitivity this way for as long as I can remember. It's a tough one, but I try to remind myself, "what do they know?" Thanks for an article I can keep on file when I'm struggling!

I remember at one point early in my career in High Tech one of the VP's said something very derogatory to me and I got really upset. I saw another VP in the hall and he could see the tears welling up in my eyes an asked me what happened. We went into a meeting room with the door closed and I told him the store. I was seriously about 23 years old at the time.

The VP who let me confide in him gave me a great come back that went something like this "thanks for your valuable input, that means SO MUCH to me coming from you" but to say it with HEAVY SARCASM!

But, what he was trying to tell me is that other VP was not very well thought of and that I should not give his stupid comment another thought - but he could not come right out and say that since they were both VP's. But, that sentence and that moment has stayed with me for the past 20 years and I replay that tape whenever someone says something derogatory to me. It's like it just helps me to let it roll right off my back!

"Thank you for you feedback; means alot to me coming from you! " Sometimes I mean it and other times I use it with big drama and just kill the aXX with kindness. Move on.
