If you’re a dork (like I am) you know where that line came from. The line, “resistance is futile” was spoken by The Borg. The Borg are a fictional pseudo-race of cybernetic organisms depicted in the Star Trek universe. I took this definition from Wikipedia because there is no way I could have explained it. Anyway, why am I talking about The Borg?
The Borg are correct in stating that resistance is futile. It is futile. Yet, we continue to attempt it. We resist what is good for us. We resist change. We resist help. We resist connection. We resist challenging ourselves.
So what is the big deal about resisting something? If it doesn’t feel good, why should you do it? Life is too short to do things you don’t want to do, right? Right! Except, when you base those decisions on FEAR – False Evidence Appearing Real.
Have you ever decided you want to do a particular thing and then you change your mind about it? It feels like a good idea in the moment and then you start doubting yourself and it doesn’t feel good anymore. You start feeling resistant to it. Chances are, once the resistance kicks in, you bag the idea all together. If you are meant to learn or experience a particular thing, continuing to resist it will only make it more difficult for you in the future. It will eventually hit you like a freight train. Has this ever happened in your life?
Resistance comes up in my life all the time. However, I don’t give in to it anymore. I’ve been hit by the freight train too many times. It’s futile, remember? Here’s the thing; resistance = fear and fear is an affirmation of your growth. I learned that while training with Rhonda Britten at the Fearless Living Institute. It took me a while to really understand it.
Here’s how it works. When you get that feeling of being resistant to something, your fear is kicking in. You may not even understand what you’re afraid of. You just know it doesn’t feel good. Well, another thing I learned is that feelings lie! Just because fear is telling you that something is a bad idea and it doesn’t feel good, does not mean that is truth.
When you feel that resistance (fear) to something that you logically know will not hurt you, stop for a minute and lean into it. Embrace it. Don’t run from it. You are standing on the edge of something big. All you have to do is stop resisting and step off into the unknown. Yes, this brings more fear! But so what! What would the benefit be of stepping off into the unknown and challenging yourself?
The benefit is huge self-growth and clarity about who you are and what you’re made of. What an awesome benefit! I promise you that if you lean into that resistance instead of running from it, you will experience more confidence, more joy and more clarity in your life.
So where in your life are you resisting? How can you lean into it? Leave comments, please! Let’s start a conversation. Fear can only exist in the dark. If we shine light on it, it doesn’t stand a chance!
